I know that a lot of rhetoric since the porn ban has been announced has been along the lines of “this is about more than just porn!” and, like, it is but fuck I’m going to talk about the porn.

Tumblr is (or I should say was) one of the few places that made porn and erotica, whether filmed, shot, drawn or written, that was actually queer- and female-friendly very visible. This was a place where women, especially queer women, trans people, gay people, bi people, etc. could find non-fetishizing, non-exploitative porn that was made by and for them. It was entirely produced by independent sex workers, artists and other content creators who were by and large a part of the community they created NSFW content for and about. It was one of the few places on the Internet where you could find porn that wasn’t controlled by fucking Mindgeek or any number of their gross, dehumanizing porn studios. The people that produce disgusting porn that promotes violence against women, pedophilia, rape culture etc. are going to be 100% unaffected by this. If anything, they’ll profit from it.

And no porn might not be some amazingly deep thing that makes some monumental contribution to our art and culture or whatever, but sexuality is a part of most of us and it’s not something to be ashamed of. Especially for marginalized people and women, finding honest, explicit and ethical expressions of sexuality that appealed to us was kind of a good, healthy thing to discover. And now that’s being erased, and it just straight up sucks (pun not intended but appreciated).
